How to setup PPTP and L2TP on Android Honeycomb
Note that when experiencing any kind of connection issues with PPTP, the first thing to try would be L2TP protocol instead.
Also make sure to always test several VPN servers.
Attention: L2TP on Android v4 (ICS) does not work anymore since changes made by Google in this version.
Please use PPTP or OpenVPN instead, in that cases.
OK, lets begin.
Navigate to the settings (e.g. by tapping the Settings shortcut on your desktop)
Tap Wireless networks
Tap VPN settings
Tap Add VPN.
In this window you need to decide if you want to create a PPTP or L2TP connection.
Its a good idea to start with PPTP.
Tap Add PPTP VPN when wanting to create a PPTP connection, or
Tap Add L2TP VPN when wanting to create a L2TP connection.
In case you decided to create a PPTP connection:
In this window, enter everything as its displayed in the screenshot -
VPN name: Anything you want. HMA pptp is a good idea.
Set VPN server: Here, enter the server IP of the VPN server you want to connect to.
Get the IPs in the VPN control panel under PPTP servers.
Enable encryption: Enable this
DNS search domains: Any DNS server you prefer.
GoogleDNS is fast, so you can use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 here
Once you have finished entering this, tap on the options icon in the top right and select Save.
In case you decided to create a L2TP connection:
In this window, enter everything as its displayed in the screenshot -
VPN name: Anything you want. HMA L2TP is a good idea.
Set VPN server: Here, enter the server IP of the VPN server you want to connect to.
The L2TP server IPs can be found
Enable L2TP secret: Leave this unchecked.
DNS search domains: Any DNS server you prefer.
GoogleDNS is fast, so you can use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 here
Once you have finished entering this, tap on the options icon in the top right and select Save.
On the VPN settings page, you now see the VPN connections you just created.
Tap Hma pptp when you want to connect to the VPN server via PPTP protocol, or
tap Hma l2tp when you want to connect to the VPN server via L2TP protocol.
You will be asked to enter your login details:
Username: Your VPN account username (the same that you use to login @ the VPN control panel)
Password: Your PPTP password (NOT your account password). Also for L2TP connections!
If you dont know your PPTP password, its located at PPTP servers in the VPN control panel.
Remember username: Check this, so you dont need to enter your login details again.
Now, tap Connect.
